Hello everyone! Happy Tuesday! I wanted to have this week’s post be like a progress point. Around this time last year I made a post about self-confidence. And correlated it to my body journey. Well, I am back a year later to tell you that wow have I grown. In more ways than one really. When it comes to talking about our bodies, it seems like such a touchy subject for many. No matter your shape, it seems everyone wants to have an opinion on it. Well, over the course of the two years I’ve been on this journey with my body, I’ve learned sone valuable life lessons. One’s that I use as a constant reminder everyday.
I debated adding this lesson on here ,but it’s the truth. I’ve always been a chubby kid since I was a toddler. So, my relationship with food has been toxic since I can remember. I would eat just to fill a sad void in my life. I’d eat when I was bored. My body journey had to tackle what was the root of many problems. Which was how I interact and deal with food in my life.
It’s great to want to be healthy, lose weight, maintain your shape, etc. But if you don’t have a good, healthy relationship with food then it may go down hill. Understanding why you interact with food in that way. Why you have certain negative connotations? Even now I’m still trying to break and habits that I’ve made over the years. Trying to learn that it’s okay to eat what I want and that I don’t need to starve myself to be healthy.
2. Your body journey isn't the same as others
This is definitely something that is a constant reminder. Everyone’s bodies are different. And everyone has their own body journey that they go through in life. I remember in the beginning I was comparing myself to others. Following other social media influencers that have the ideal body type I wanted. But the inspiration quickly turned in to comparison. Putting myself down thinking that will help me grow. When in actuality it was bringing me down even further. So, remember that your body journey isn’t the same as others. Everyone will have different relationships and milestones. Focus on your own growth.
Speaking of growth, this isn’t a race. You’re not competing with anyone. Or trying to be better than someone else. You take this work on your own. Even if you’re trying to be “body ready” in a year. That’s unrealistic. Growth isn’t meant to be steady. And it isn’t meant to be linear. Growth isn’t a race to be won. Celebrate small victories and wins. Give yourself some credit here.
Wanting to better your relationship with your body isn’t just about the physical aspect. It’s also about the emotional & mental aspect. Having to buckle down and do the ground work. For me, when I started to notice the negative mindset I had on my body and my self-esteem, I decided to go to therapy. I decided to start journaling and doing shadow work .Trying to understand myself more and where all this hurt comes from. Honestly that has been the most fulfilling part of all this.
5. Have patience with yourself
This one is something I still am working on. I think when it comes to patience it is a constant evolution. And the same goes for how you view your body. You won’t get to the progress you want so soon. And don’t expect for these habits to break so easily. Be patient with yourself and how you go about this. Everyone had their own painful pasts in life. Events that made them who they are. That warped their way of thinking. And as adults, it takes a lot to break those thoughts down. Especially if they have been cemented in your psyche for so long.
