Beauty As Seen In the Eye of the Beholder

What is beauty?

It is defined as:

a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

Although, beauty has many definitions.

It is not just one singular standard that society forces us to confide to. Many things can be deemed beautiful. Such as how the light hits the horizon. Or how the stars shine at night in the woods. This goes the same for us, women.

But society confuses beauty for perfection. In order to be deemed worthy by the eyes of everyone, you need to have these certain features to you. Whether it is the right color of skin, the average weight, or even the ideal cup size. If you do not meet the criteria, then you are not worthy.

But that is simply not true.

I believe that beauty is as seen in the eye of the beholder. There should be no standard of beauty because what makes us all different is what makes us all unique.

We all scroll through social media and see these “Instagram bodies” and see our favorite celebrities conform to the healthy diet or slim fit that is deemed acceptable. While that is alright and perfectly okay, there is no reason to start comparing yourself. Everyone should want to try and better themselves, but it should be for yourself.

Now don’t get me wrong, I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t say that I sometimes feel this way. Feel like I am not pretty enough or small enough or that my skin color is too dark…to be what I want to be. When I get like this, I just must remind myself, that it’s not on me to change myself. That if what I see as being me, is seen as being odd to someone else, this is not my problem. It’s not my worry. I can’t control what others think, but I can control my own thoughts.

If you want to get a nose job, then go do that. If you want to lose 30 lbs then go do that, too. Beauty is what you make of it. It should be what you want and what you strive to see in yourself. Some of us, push ourselves to the point that it is killing our mental health. We sacrifice our own well being for what we think will make us liked or make us suitable to the romantic partners. Listen to me when I say this:

YOU DON’T NEED TO ALTER YOURSELF FOR THEM TO WANT YOU!

If they can’t love you for you then you deserve better. You deserve to be accepted for who you are and as you are, quirks and all. Those stretch marks on your butt are your tiger stripes. The giant birthmark that you so wish to hide is what makes you rare. Your rolls on your back or the jiggle to your thighs is the reason why you’re so desirable. It is not something to be disgusted by.

Recently, I was reading through these poem quotes and I saw this one quote. It’s what prompted me to write this post. The quote read:

” we are all born so beautiful, the greatest tradegy is being convinced we are not.”

Beautiful isn’t something that someone should question. It is something that you have and always will be. No matter what. So, go out and be bold. Be you. And challenge anybody that wants to say otherwise.
