Healing: 5 Powerful Ways How I Heal As A Black Woman

Hello T.A & Co. readers, AND HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH! Welcome to this week’s T.A & Co. Tuesday blog post. Whether you are a new reader or a returning one, I am glad you’re here. As a Black woman, self-care and healing can be a crucial aspect of maintaining physical and mental health. There are many challenges that come with being a Black woman, from dealing with systemic racism to combating daily microaggressions. In order to combat these challenges, it’s essential to have a self-care routine that prioritizes healing and restoration. In this blog post, we’ll explore 5 ways that Black women can prioritize their healing and well-being. Whether it’s through therapy, spirituality, community, or self-expression, these methods can help you to recharge and feel empowered in the face of adversity.

Healing can come from rejecting harmful societal narratives and stereotypes. One stereotype is the “independent Black girl” trope, which perpetuates the idea that Black women do not need or want help from others. This trope can be damaging because it reinforces the notion that Black women are strong and capable to the point of being superhuman, thereby invalidating their emotions, experiences and needs for support.

As a Black woman, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay to lean on others for support and to not always have to go it alone. It’s also crucial to be mindful of the language you use to describe yourself and to not let external influences dictate how you should feel or behave. By rejecting the “independent Black girl” trope and embracing vulnerability, you can build a stronger support system and prioritize your healing.

2. Acknowledging my accomplishments

Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments can be an important part of the healing process. I feel like Black women are meant to be humble & keep themselves humble. As if being too loud with our successes is bragging or being “too proud”, as my mom would say. It’s common to focus on our failures and shortcomings, but it’s important to acknowledge and appreciate the wins along the way. This part of my healing process is even something I have to continue to remind myself of. If you’re not going to celebrate yourself and your milestones , then who is?

By becoming your biggest supporter, you can build self-confidence, reduce stress and anxiety, and cultivate a more positive outlook on life. Whether it’s small victories like completing a task or larger accomplishments like reaching a personal or professional goal, taking time to celebrate your wins can help you to feel empowered and resilient. When it feels like no one else is in your corner, being your own biggest fan can help you to stay motivated, focused, and committed to your healing journey. By acknowledging and celebrating your accomplishments, you can prioritize your well-being and empower yourself to heal and growth.

At some point in my healing journey I had to realize that in order to fully see the growth I want, I needed to learn to move on. Moving on from past traumas, failures, and disappointments can be a challenging process, but it’s essential for growth and well-being. It’s important to understand that moving on does not mean forgetting what has happened or denying your emotions, but rather acknowledging and processing them in a healthy way. Through  journaling, practicing self-reflection, and participating in activities that brings me  joy I was able to strip down the past & leave it there. It’s important to use these tools to help you to reframe your experiences in a positive light. By learning to move on, you can create space for new opportunities and growth, and empower yourself to heal and live a fulfilling life.

Expressing oneself can be a powerful form of healing, allowing you to connect with your innermost thoughts, feelings, and desires. As Black women, it’s common to feel pressure to conform to societal expectations, but it’s essential to remember that you are an individual with your own unique experiences, perspectives, and passions. By expressing yourself authentically, you can connect with your true self, build self-confidence, and cultivate a more positive self-image.

Whether it’s through writing, art, music, or any other creative outlet, the key is to find a form of expression that resonates with you and allows you to fully express yourself. You may choose to share your work with others or keep it private, the important thing is to allow yourself the space to be who you are, without fear of judgement or criticism. By embracing your individuality and expressing yourself how you want to, you can take control of your healing journey and empower yourself to be the unique, authentic person you were meant to be.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is unique and that there is no right or wrong way to express oneself. By embracing your individuality and expressing yourself authentically, you can prioritize your well-being and heal on your own terms.

5. Going to Therapy

Therapy is an important tool for healing , and it is a brave step for anyone to take. I’ve been in therapy for 2 years now and the growth I’ve seen in myself amazes me each time. As a Black woman, it can be particularly challenging to seek help because of the negative stereotypes and stigma surrounding mental health in the Black community. However, it’s important to remember that seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness. By combating these harmful narratives and seeking help, you are taking care of yourself and prioritizing your well-being.

Going to therapy can be an incredibly powerful experience, providing a safe space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. A therapist can help you to work through past traumas, deal with current stressors, and develop coping strategies for the future. It’s important to find a therapist who understands and appreciates your unique experiences as a Black woman. With the right support, you can work towards healing, growth, and self-acceptance.
